COME LORD JESUS-MARANATHA
PEOPLE, LOOK EAST- PREPARING ADVENT MUSIC
Try this on for size- were you to ask me “What single hymn or song best captures the season of Advent?”
And to that I replied, “Well, the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic/Mine eyes have seen the glory!’”
Many of you would politely murmur, “Well, Charles has finally lost it; it was only a matter of time.”
Humbug! Take in the partial measure of this coming First Sunday of Advent’s Gospel Lesson:“
So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake!”
Now, take in just these two verses from “Battle Hymn”-
2. I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camp; They have builded Him an altar in the morning dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps. His day is marching on.
3. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat. He is sifting out the hearts of all before His judgment seat. O be swift my soul to answer Him, be jubilant my feet. Our God is marching on.
”Perfect? Perfect for the scenarios preparing, becoming of and the dawn of the day of the Lord: His Second Coming. Yes, the Parousia, the apocalypse, the final vanquishing of the Enemy and the establishment of the Kingdom of God in both heaven and earth presents us with the mandate to “keep and trim our lamps a-burning.” A redeemed Christian will have made his home a domicile for the Lord, King of the Universe…..But, needless to say, “Battle Hymn” isn’t a strong cultural fit with Advent.
So, I thought I’d highlight hymns and songs that presage the deepest meaning of the season of preparation; yes to the Infant King of Christmas, but YES to the King Who is yet to come again. In this first installment article of “Come, Lord Jesus, Maranatha,” I’ll offer examples of truly preparatory texts/hymns/songs.
Hymns with a strong “end times” or eschatological emphasis:
