Music Director Musings-
How best can we serve Christ? As Deacon Ken Ramage quoted St. Theresa of Avila (which I paraphrase), On earth at this moment, “we” Christians are our Lord’s hands, eyes and hearts.
As a self-admitted “Martha,” I’ve always found it difficult to reconcile the lesson of this week’s Gospel. Of the two sisters (Mary and Martha) who, for us, may represent supposed opposing models of how best to attend to Christ in our midst, that lesson perhaps is best realized in moderation and hopefully equal balance between the choice to listen or to wait upon the master.
Well, as Deacon reminds us, before we choose to apply a helping (or hurting) hand, we owe it ourselves and our Lord to ask Him to “Lead me, guide me” towards what we see and, more importantly, need to see. And no matter how difficult it may prove, we need to keep open hearts in order to willingly and humbly invite all to His Heavenly Banquet. (Ven al banquete or Come to the Feast.) And only then can we mobilize our hands, feet and intellect to best serve Him by serving all, particularly the least and last (Mt.25) Fr. Ricky Manalo’s anthem “Ang katawan ni Cristo” reminds us of the connection between a family gather probably not at all unlike the gathering in the sisters’ home with Christ. And both of them, like the companions at Emmaus, like Peter proclaiming his Master’s Christhood, had that “Aha!” moment of “Behold, the Living Son of God!” “Christ beside me” is literal when we utter His Holy Name and invoke His Presence among us by prayer, praise and sacrifice. So only then can we backtrack and appropriately serve Him by how we serve our neighbors, friends and enemies both. Because, after all it is a fact that “Jesu (is) our joy and desiring and that indeed “Love has come.” Maranatha.
